Butter Tarts were common in pioneer Canadian cooking, and they remain a characteristic pastry of Canada, considered a recipe of genuinely Canadian origin. They are likely a derivative of Les Filles des Rois' Tartes au Sucre, made by the imported brides from dried fruit, maple syrup and butter in Québec in the 1600s.
